Our Doctors

At Gastric Balloon Australia, your weight loss journey, and all of the care surrounding it, will be coordinated and managed by our specialist doctors. Our doctors are world leaders in non-surgical and surgical bariatrics (the branch of medicine which deals with weight management and obesity). Your initial consultation, procedures, and many of your regular post-procedure follow-ups will all be one-on-one with one of our specialist and bariatric physicians so take some time to meet them below.

Dr George Marinos, Bariatric Endoscopist & Gastroenterologist

Dr Marinos completed his medical degree with honours (MB BS Hons) at the University of NSW in 1982.  He was a resident and a registrar at Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals and then completed his Advanced Training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Prince of Wales and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals (FRACP – 1990).  Dr Marinos then worked and studied overseas at the Kings College Hospital, London for 5 years where he completed his MD thesis (1996).

In 1996 Dr Marinos began his private Gastroenterology practice in the Eastern Suburbs and founded South Eastern Gastroenterology. In 2001 Dr Marinos co-founded the Maroubra Day Surgery (now known as City East Specialist Day Hospital) and is the Chairman of its Medical Advisory Committee to this day.

In 2005 Dr Marinos founded Gastric Balloon Australia as the first specialist clinic using gastric balloons for weight loss. Under Dr Marinos’ guidance, Gastric Balloon Australia has grown to become Australia’s leading clinic in endoscopic bariatric procedures and research.

Dr Adrian Sartoretto, Bariatric Endoscopist & Gastroenterologist

Dr Adrian Sartoretto is a Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist with a subspecialty interest in Bariatric Endoscopy.  He completed his studies at the University of Sydney in 2007 and undertook specialist physician training at Westmead Hospital before completing an Endoscopy Fellowship at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in 2015.

He joined GBA in 2016 and took on a leadership role, greatly expanding the multidisciplinary team and developing a unique, comprehensive lifestyle programme to complement bariatric endoscopic interventions.  One of the defining achievements has been the development of the world-first weight management programme, GBA Active, which allows real-time weight monitoring of all patients to enable proactive management and enhanced weight loss results.

Dr Sartoretto has achieved a number of Australian firsts, including performing the first case of Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) in October of 2016 and is currently the most experienced Proceduralist in this field in Australia. He also performed the first cases of Aspire Assist in 2017.  He is an investigator in a number of clinical trials examining novel devices and therapies in the emerging field of Bariatric Endoscopy.  He is considered an Australian leader in the field and actively teaches specialists in the field and is frequently invited to speak at conferences and meetings.

Dr Arthur Grillas, Consultant Gastroenterologist

Dr Arthur Grillas has many years of experience as a Consultant Gastroenterologist, completing his medical degree at the University of Tasmania in 1986.

Dr Grillas was a resident and a registrar at Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals and then completed his Advanced Training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Prince of Wales Hospital in 1994, acquiring Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He is recognised by Australia’s peak endoscopy accreditation body, The Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE).

Dr Grillas is a Senior Staff Specialist in Gastroenterology at the Wollongong Hospital campus and trains medical students, junior doctors and trainee specialists, and also has private consulting rooms in Sydney. He has membership with the professional societies including the Gastrointestinal Society of Australia, the American Society of Gastroenterological Endoscopy (ASGE) and the Australian Medical Association (AMA).

Dr Grillas joined the GBA team in 2017, and has an interest in preventative health and obesity management with minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. He performs gastric balloon procedures (insertions, removals and adjustments) which are all supported by the GBA Lifestyle Programme.

Dr David Links, General, Upper GI & Bariatric Surgeon

Dr Links (MBBS, MS, FRACS) is an Upper GI and Bariatric surgeon with a minimally invasive surgical interest. He was awarded his medical degree with Honours from UNSW in 2002 and undertook general surgical training from 2007 to 2011, based at Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Dr Links undertook further subspecialty training, completing a three year ANZGOSA accredited fellowship. This included extensive experience in minimally invasive foregut surgery and bariatric surgery at Concord Hospital.

Dr Links joined the GBA team in 2015, and performs laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (also known as gastric sleeve), supported by the GBA Lifestyle programme which includes our team of nurses, dietitians, psychologists and exercise physiologists, to optimize the long-term results for those people considering obesity and metabolic surgery.

Dr Yiotoula Sotiropoulos, Bariatric Physician 

Dr Sotiropoulos obtained her medical degree from the University of New South Wales, graduating in 1985. Following her internship, she spent several years working in a number of General Practices in Sydney and in rural NSW, before establishing her own practice in the southern suburbs of Sydney, where she has practiced for the last 30 years. She is a member of the AMA and the RACGP, and has been involved in teaching medical students from both the University of NSW and the University of Sydney.

She has a passion for preventative medicine and promotion of wellness, management of chronic health problems and working with a multidisciplinary team, women’s health and paediatrics.

Dr Sotiropoulos joined the GBA team in 2017 and supports GBA Patients throughout their journey.
